Geographical limits of smooth and partially smooth waters
The Minister for Transport has approved minor changes to Schedule 1 of the W.A. Marine (Certificates of Competency and Safety Manning) Regulations 1983.
These changes update the descriptions for the geographic limits of WA's smooth and partially smooth waters for domestic commercial vessel operations to give more detail and more accurate coordinates, and to reflect some slight boundary changes. Plans for each location have also been amended.
Geographical limits of partially smooth waters ('D' area)
In early 2018, slight changes were made to the descriptions of D areas (known as partially smooth waters) to give more detail and more accurate coordinates. The Kuri Bay boundary was changed slightly to better align with the perpendicular for ease of reference.
The following plans show the boundaries of partially smooth waters at various locations along the Western Australian coastline.
'D' areas are the operational areas suitable for use by domestic commercial vessels in Service Category Class D or higher in the commercial vessel service category system. For further information on Service Categories, please go to the AMSA website page: 'Service Categories'.

Geographical limits of smooth waters ('E' area)
In early 2018, slight changes were made to the descriptions of E areas (known as smooth waters) to give more detail and more accurate coordinates. There were also some slight changes to the geographical limits to reflect new maritime facilities at Geraldton, and to align with landmarks in Port Hedland and Carnarvon. The following plans show the boundaries of smooth waters at various locations along the Western Australian coastline.
E areas are the operational areas suitable for use by domestic commercial vessels in Service Category Class E or higher in the commercial vessel service category system.
