Private jetties

How to license a new or existing private jetty or modify an existing private jetty.

A private jetty is a structure that is only used for domestic and recreational use.

Private jetties need to be licenced and maintained to a high standard of safety.

Erect and construct a new private jetty

If the structure does not exist yet, you will need to apply for a new Erect and Construct Jetty Licence.

To apply you must submit:

  • Completed New Jetty Licence Application form
  • A copy of the Certificate of Title showing ownership for the property or land to where the structure is situated
  • An A4-sized site plan showing the structures dimensions and location in relation to the applicant's property (the plan must include all other structures that exist, e.g. boat ramps, other jetties and mooring poles)
  • Copies of all relevant local government or other authority approvals
  • Complete Marine Engineers drawings or sketches of structure and its location in relation to land.

Once the jetty structure has been built in accordance with the timeframe approved by the local authority, you must complete a statutory declaration before the Use and Maintain licence can be issued.

Licence an existing private jetty

If you have purchased property or land with an existing jetty or structure which is now legally owned by you, you will need to apply for an Existing Private Jetty licence.

Your application must include:

  • A New Jetty Licence Application form, signed by the applicant and the previous licensee (who has relinquished the licence)
  • Copy of the certificate of title showing ownership for the property or land to where the structure is situated
  • An A4-sized site plan showing the structures dimensions and location in relation to the applicant's property. The plan must include all other structures that exist, such as boat ramps, other jetties and mooring poles

Modify an existing private jetty

You must apply for a modification to an existing private jetty licence, if you want to:

  • change the type of activity your jetty is used for, such as changing a private jetty to one used for commercial activity.
  • change and modify the jetty structure from its original construction, including:
    • new piles
    • a change to the shape or size of the jetty (footprint)
    • jetty add-on (for example, boat lifter)
    • anything related to the construction and foundation of the structure which may be under water.

To apply you must submit:

  • A completed Jetty Licence Application Modification of Existing Structures form
  • Copy of the certificate of title showing ownership for the property or land to where the structure is situated
  • An A4-sized site plan clearly showing the modification to the dimensions and location of the structure in relation to the applicant's property (If the modification of licence is submitted due to structure change the plan must include all other structures that exist, such as boat ramps, other jetties and mooring poles)
  • Copies of all relevant local government authority or other authority approvals
