  Interpreters and language translation services

If you require an interpreter, please phone 13 11 56 and request an interpreter for your language.

We also provide on-site interpreters for face-to-face interviews.

Please note:

  • NAATI*, WAITI, and AUSIT maintain an online directory of practitioners, but do not provide the actual translation service.
  • DoT will accept translations from tertiary qualified translators.
  • If your overseas driver’s licence document is not in English, you will need an official translation of your overseas driver's licence document, along with your original overseas driver's licence when transferring your overseas licence.
  • DoT will accept translations provided by the Department of Home Affairs ‘Free Translating Service’.
  • A translator can help you understand what is needed before taking a Practical Driving Assessment (PDA) and to help after your test is finished. Call 13 11 56 before your PDA date to arrange assistance.

*For NAATI translations, the Department of Transport will not accept translations by an accredited translator dated after 1 January 2018 (excluding translators holding Permanent Pre-2007 NAATI Accreditation that are listed on the Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI) website). Translations by a NAATI translator after this date must be completed by translators with NAATI certification (including Recognised Practising). Translations dated before 1 January 2018 are not affected and will still be accepted.
