Booking a practical driving assessment FAQs
Find answers to common questions about booking a PDA using DoTDirect.
You can book, reschedule or cancel a practical driving assessment (PDA) online using DoTDirect.
You can make your PDA booking up to 6 months in advance.
To book a PDA you must meet the age, eligibility and driving experience requirements.
Searching for a timeslot
You can use DoTDirect to search for a PDA timeslot at a location and specific date.
If you can’t see your preferred location on the list, it could be because:
- PDAs for your type of vehicle class are not available at the location
- the location does not conduct PDAs
- some regional locations are not available to book online.
If your preferred regional location is not available online, you will need to contact the regional location directly for PDA booking enquiries.

Booking confirmations and notifications
Once you have confirmed your PDA booking, a confirmation will appear on screen.
You can choose to:
- print this confirmation for future reference; or
- send a confirmation by email or SMS.
You will only be sent a printed confirmation by mail if your booking was made by your driving instructor.
However, you can log in to DoTDirect at anytime and reprint your booking confirmation.
If you or your driving instructor have not made or changed your booking and you have received a booking confirmation, contact us on 13 11 56 between 7:00am and 6:00pm, Monday to Friday.
Cancel or change a booking
If you don’t feel ready to take your PDA, you can cancel or reschedule your booking.
You must give more than 2 full business days’ notice to cancel or change your practical driving assessment, otherwise you will be charged for your original booking.
Business days do not include public holidays or weekends and are calculated from 12:00am to 11:59pm.
If your cancel a booking, a cancellation confirmation will appear on screen, but you will not be sent a printed cancellation confirmation.
Booking with a driving instructor
Your driving instructor can book a PDA for you.
If you have given consent for your driving instructor to book for you, you will need to provide them with the following details:
- your first and last name
- date of birth
- driver’s licence/permit number
- driver’s licence/permit expiry date
Once your driving instructor has completed your PDA booking, you will be sent a booking confirmation by mail.
You will be able to log in to your DoTDirect account and view, change or cancel the booking if required.
FAQs
Is there a limit to how many searches I can perform in a day?
Yes. An error message will appear once you have reached the search limit.
Can I book a timeslot for today?
No, you cannot make a same day booking. If you try to book at 11:58 pm for the following day, the booking only will be confirmed if it is successful before 11:59 and 59 seconds.
If I have 2 learner’s permits for different vehicle classes, how do I book these online?
If you have multiple learner’s permits, you will have the option to select the vehicle class you want to book for when booking your PDA.
You can only have one booking per vehicle class at a time.
Why do I see different vacancies or no vacancies when searching the same day and site as someone else?
You may not see the same search results as someone else because of the licence class eligibility and experience requirements for different customers.
My friend has a PDA booking and wants to swap it with mine. Can we do this online?
No. You cannot swap bookings online.
Why is the ‘Change’ option not available to me?
You cannot change a PDA booking that occurs within 2 full business days.
You can cancel within 2 full business days, however you will be charged for the booking and will need to rebook and pay for another PDA.
