When do I need to have my photo taken?
You’re required to have your photo and signature captured:
- when applying for a new driver's licence
- every 10 years when renewing your driver's licence (your licence renewal notice will indicate when this needs to be done).
What you need to bring
You’ll need to bring the following when having your photo taken:
- notice of photo requirement, for example: your driver’s licence renewal notice
- proof of identity documents.
Can I submit my photo by post?
You can submit your photo by post if you are unable to have your picture taken at a licensing centre, regional agent or PhotoPoint location because you:
- have a medical condition preventing you from attending one of the PhotoPoint locations
- are living in a remote area within WA
- are travelling interstate or overseas.
Please download and complete the Photo kit (Form E13), which includes detailed instructions and the mailing address.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. You can update your photo and/or signature (outside of the required renewal process) if you’ve changed your appearance, changed your name, or upgraded your licence. This must be done at a Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) centre, regional DoT office or agent .
You can update your address details online. You will need to attend a Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) centre, regional DoT office or agent to have your change of name details updated.
No. You will need to attend a Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) centre, regional DoT office or agent to have your change of name details updated before you can renew your licence. You will need to attend in person and provide original supporting documentation. Once your details are updated, you can then have your photo taken at a PhotoPoint location.
Yes. All Driver and Vehicle Services centres and most regional agents have a private area for taking a photo. Australia Post outlets can’t provide this service.
The portrait taken for the driver's licence must include full facial features; however, it may cover the hair. A photo will be taken in a private area at a Driver and Vehicle Services centre, DoT regional office or agent. Australia Post outlets can't provide this service.
Head gear worn for religious purposes does not have to be removed for the photo capture provided it doesn’t cover the face.
Yes. If the head wear is worn for medical reasons and its removal would cause unnecessary difficulty or embarrassment, it may be worn provided the face is visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both sides of the face.
The photo for your learner’s permit is valid for 10 years.
No. Your learner’s permit image can be used for other learner’s permit applications. The image cannot be used on a driver’s licence card. Similarly, a driver’s licence image cannot be used on a learner’s permit card.
