Get a vehicle inspected

You may need to get your vehicle inspected to license it, remove a defect notice (yellow sticker), or if your vehicle requires an annual inspection.

A Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) vehicle inspection is solely for determining whether a vehicle meets vehicle standards and statutory requirements for licensing. It’s not intended to be a comprehensive assessment of the overall condition of a vehicle or its parts, and shouldn't be used to work out a vehicle’s value.

What is checked in a vehicle inspection?

A vehicle inspection ensures your vehicle meets safety standards. Here are some of the key areas checked. Please note this list is provided for general advice only.

  • Body work.
  • Brakes.
  • Chassis and suspension.
  • Drive Line.
  • Electrical.
  • Steering.
  • Tyres and rims.
  • Vehicle identification.
  • Vehicle modifications.
  • Compliance with Vehicle Standards.

For more details, refer to our pre-vehicle examination checklist, Are you checking your vehicle regularly? - PDF.

Reasons you may need to get your vehicle inspected

You might need an inspection for:

  • licensing (register) your vehicle in Western Australia (WA)
  • receiving a defect notice (yellow sticker or work order)
  • modifying your vehicle (e.g. changing body, engine, or dimensions)
  • an annual inspection*
  • licensing a repairable written-off vehicle
  • expired inspection certificate.**

*Annual inspections

Some vehicles require an inspection each time their vehicle licence (registration) is renewed.

You’ll be sent a notification letter informing you of this annual requirement. If you haven’t received a notification letter and you believe your vehicle may be subject to an annual inspection, you should contact us.

Vehicles requiring annual inspection include:

  • vehicles with more than 12 seats (including driver)
  • vehicles with 8 or more seats (including driver) on Hire and Drive insurance
  • vehicles with 8 or more seats used solely or principally to carry students to/from school or school-approved events
  • Passenger Transport Vehicles (PTV) including charter vehicles, rideshare vehicles, and taxis
  • driving instructor vehicles
  • tow trucks.

Find out more about PTV inspections and compliance checks.

**Expired inspection certificates

Inspection certificates are valid for 3 months. Check the expiry date printed on the certificate.

Step 1: Select a metro or regional Authorised Inspection Station (AIS)

Search for metro or regional Authorised Inspection Stations (AIS).

Important: Ensure your vehicle is suitable for inspection before booking. For light vehicles, the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) must be under 4,500kg. Check the GVM on your vehicle licence paper or compliance plate. Vehicles with a GVM of 4,500kg or more need to be inspected at a heavy vehicle AIS.

Motorcycle owners should inform the AIS of the engine capacity/LAMS category.

Note:

  • Unlicensed (unregistered) vehicles will need a temporary movement permit to reach the AIS.
  • For written-off vehicle inspections, consult our list of authorised AIS.
  • AIS don’t inspect personal import vehicles or vehicles imported as “personal effects.”
  • Owners of stretch limousines should tell the AIS of the dimensions of their vehicle when booking to ensure they are equipped to conduct an inspection.
  • Light vehicles (under 4,500 kg GVM) may also include caravans, trailers and motorcycles.
  • Heavy vehicles (over 4,500 kg GVM) may also include caravans and trailers.
  • Exclusions may apply, please contact your preferred outlet for full details.

Tractor plant, machinery, oversize and new heavy vehicles

These may require inspection on-site as most can’t be moved with a temporary movement permit.

Tractor plant

  • Excavators.
  • Forklifts.
  • Front end loaders.
  • Road graders.
  • Road rollers.
  • Skid steers.
  • Telehandlers.
  • Tractors.

New heavy trailers and trucks

  • Concrete pump
  • Drill rig.
  • Mobile cranes.
  • Oversize vehicles.
  • Overweight vehicles.

Metro tractor plant, machinery, oversize and new heavy vehicle inspections

To arrange an onsite inspection in the metro area, call the DTMI mobile service on (08) 9216 8561. Pre-booking is essential.

Regional tractor plant, machinery, oversize and new heavy vehicle inspections

If you live in a regional area, and require a tractor plant, machinery, oversize or new heavy vehicle inspected, please use the following process.

  1. Contact your local/nearest AIS
  2. Ask whether they are able to inspect the tractor plant, machinery, oversize or new heavy vehicle.
  3. If so, your local/nearest AIS will seek the appropriate approvals from DTMI to attend the site or advise of transport options (float/trailer etc).

Tow trucks (only)

All tow trucks licensed in WA for the first time must be inspected at the Kelmscott Vehicle Inspection Centre.

Contact Kelmscott on 1300 776 065 to book the initial inspection. At the time of inspection, you must ensure that:

  • the modification plate contains T1 and T2 modification codes, and
  • supporting modification paperwork is presented.

Once licensed, subsequent tow truck inspections can be made at an AIS.

Refer to Vehicle Standard Bulletin (VSB6) Section T – Tow Trucks - PDF, which can be downloaded from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s  website.

Note: the NHVR website provides separate checklists in editable DOCX format.

Step 2: Book your vehicle inspection

You can book your inspection directly with an AIS

Because these are private businesses working on behalf of DTMI, payment methods, booking processes, and opening hours can vary. Of note:

  • you’ll need to book and pay the inspection fee directly with your chosen provider.
  • pre-payment is not available at an AIS
  • check our AIS service providers for contact details and operational hours
  • you’ll need to contact your chosen AIS directly to make any changes to your vehicle inspection booking.

Repairable written-off vehicles

Licensing a repairable written-off vehicle requires 2 inspections. The first must be by an authorised Written-Off Vehicle Register (WOVR) provider. For more information visit License a repairable written-off vehicle.

Unlicensed vehicles

You must first get a temporary movement permit (see Step 3).

Step 3: Buy a temporary movement permit (if required)

You can obtain a temporary movement permit in 3 ways:

  • online (for light vehicle owners with a WA Driver’s licence)

Light and heavy vehicle owners can:

When contacting us, have your vehicle’s engine number, chassis number, and plate number ready, along with details of your travel route.

Vehicle permit and modification fees

Fee description Amount
Temporary movement permits (except trailers and caravans) $32.40
Temporary movement permits (trailers, caravans, invalid wheel chairs) $27.00
Vehicle modification permit $75.80

Footnotes

Temporary movement permits (except trailers and caravans) and Temporary movement permits (trailers, caravans, invalid wheel chairs) include Motor Injury Insurance (MII), Vehicle Licence Duty and GST.

Step 4: On the day of the inspection

  • Arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Bring a weighbridge certificate if the vehicle’s tare weight isn’t listed in your documentation.
  • Give 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule.
  • If re-inspecting, repair previously identified faults.

Weighbridge certificates

If the tare/mass weight of the vehicle can't be verified through the manufacturer's specifications, previous licence documents, or licensing records, a weighbridge certificate is also required. A list of public weighbridges who can issue certificates is available via the Department of Industry, Science and Resources website.

What to do if your vehicle fails its inspection

If your vehicle fails inspection, you can book a vehicle re-inspection by calling your preferred AIS. A re-inspection fee is applicable.

When calling, please ensure that you advise that you are booking a re-inspection and provide the inspection reference number from your initial inspection receipt as this is required to make the re-inspection booking.

Step 5: After the inspection

Once the vehicle has successfully passed inspection, you must submit the following to a DTMI service centre or regional agent.

Review your vehicle licence documents carefully

If you believe that any of your vehicle's details such as engine, VIN, colour, or weight details were recorded incorrectly at an AIS, DTMI service centre or regional agent, you can call the Customer Contact Centre on 13 11 56 to have the matter investigated.

If the original paperwork is showing the same details as your vehicle licence documents and you still believe your vehicle details are incorrect, you must provide documentary evidence of the vehicle’s details to have the vehicle record updated.

To find out how to license your vehicle, please visit License a vehicle in Western Australia

Note: If you change your vehicle’s colour or replace its engine, you must complete and submit a Change of Vehicle Details: Change of engine and/or colour (Form E36) - PDF.

A modification permit is not required when changing the colour of your vehicle, or when changing the engine if the new engine is a like-for-like replacement.

Any increase made to a vehicle's Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) requires a vehicle inspection. If the vehicle has been modified to facilitate the increase, it must be weighed, and a weighbridge certificate must be provided to the vehicle examiner for the vehicle’s new tare weight to be recorded. Certification from an authorised modifier, second stage manufacturer or engineering and recognised signatory may be required for any modifications made to the vehicle.
