Passenger transport driver (PTD) responsibilities are regulated under the Transport (Road Passenger Services) Act 2018 (the Act) and Transport (Road Pasenger Services) Regulations 2020 (the Regulations).
To legally drive passengers for hire and reward, you must:
- have a PTD authorisation;
- the correct class of driver’s licence; and
- only drive a vehicle with a valid passenger transport vehicle (PTV) authorisation in the correct category.
As a passenger transport driver, you have a range of responsibilities including:
- ensuring safety for passengers and the general public;
- displaying an appropriate driver identity document; and
- charging fares in line with the Regulations, and always using your meter if you do rank or hail work.
On-demand rank or hail (taxi) drivers must also ensure they always accept Passenger Transport Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) cards, and meet their other PTSS obligations.
