District series number plates have specific characters that can be issued to vehicles, trailers and motorcycles owned by people who live in that shire or district.
About district series plates
District series number plates have specific characters set by the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI). You can’t order a specific number - these plates are made in bulk and follow a set alpha-numeric order, just like State series plates.
District series plates are manufactured in numerical order with a district identifier as a prefix.
- For example, 'MH' for Mandurah.
The old-style district series plates were issued in black characters on either a white or yellow background. Plates are now issued on the blue and white 'Brand WA' format.
All district series plates remain the property of the DTMI’s Chief Executive Officer. It is an offence for a person to fail to return the number plates on demand.

Since December 2021, certain district series number plates have been eligible for conversion to district series optional plates.
The benefits of choosing to convert a district series plate to an optional plate include:

- the option to remake the plates if lost or stolen.
| Fee description | Amount |

| District Plate Conversion Fee | $190.00 |
It’s quick and easy to convert. Simply call our Customer Contact Centre on 13 11 56 or attend your nearest DTMI service centre or regional agent.
Remake of district series plates
District and state series number plates issued before the introduction of the 'Brand WA' format (blue and white plates) can be remade in any of these colour combinations:
- black on white
- black on yellow
- 'Brand WA' format.
State series plates already issued in the 'Brand WA' format can only be remade in the same format.
Refer to Replace lost/stolen number plates on how to remake your district series plate or if you've lost or had them stolen.
Retaining district series plates
District series plates can be retained for re-issue on another vehicle if requested at the time of surrender.
The plates will be held for 90 days from the date of retention. A fee applies when re-issuing them to another vehicle.
If the plates haven’t been re-issued within 90 days, they will be destroyed. A remake fee will then apply if you wish to have them re-issued to another vehicle.
An electronic record of ownership will remain active for 365 days from the date of retention, unless the plates are no longer required or they are issued to a vehicle.
Note: Retained district series plates can only be reissued to a vehicle owned by the same person or an immediate family member (spouse, parent, child or sibling). This requires completion of the Application for Plate Remake/Transfer (Form E45) - PDF.
Moving retained plates from one DTMI service centre to another
Plates retained at a DTMI service centre or regional agent can be transferred to another DTMI service centre or regional agent upon request.
Call 13 11 56 to arrange this.
Transferring or swapping district series plates
District series plates can be swapped:
- between 2 vehicles owned by the same person
- to a vehicle owned by an 'immediate' family member.
Note: A fee is applicable (see Plate fees).
A state/district plate transfer; immediate family form must be completed if the plates are to be transferred to a vehicle licensed in the name of an immediate family member. See Section 3 - Plate Transfer (Immediate family only), Application for Plate Remake Transfer (Form E45) - PDF
Refer to Sell or transfer plates.
About special local authority plates
Special local authority plates are a type of optional plates that a specific to the town or shire and are offered in a broader range of colours. They’re unique to the issuing local authority or shire, often displaying its logo, emblem or crest in the design.
If you’re interested in applying for these plates, you’ll need to contact your local authority directly to submit your application.
When ordering, you can nominate which DTMI service centre or regional agent you wish to pick the plates up from.
Note: Prices for Special Local Authority plates are set by the local authority/shire.
Fitting plates to your vehicle
Screws are not supplied with plates issued by DTMI.
Standard plates are made of aluminium and have the following dimensions:
- Motor vehicle plate 372 mm x 134 mm.
- Motorcycle plate 254 mm x 100 mm.
- Auxiliary plate 253 mm x 99 mm.
Once you’ve ordered optional plates and your application has been approved, the plates will be sent to your nominated collection site. Plates will not be handed over unless they can be attached to a licensed vehicle at the time of collection. If this isn’t possible, they will be retained at a DTMI service centre or regional agent until the vehicle is ready.
You must remove the old plates and fit the new ones yourself or ask a car dealership or garage to do it for you.
Why number plates matter
WA number plates identify licensed vehicles. If you’re responsible for a vehicle, you must ensure plates are securely attached and clearly visible, in accordance with the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations 2014.
WA number plates mustn’t be used for decorative purposes or kept for sentimental reasons. If no longer in use, they must be returned to DTMI. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
Using a bike rack or mobility device?
If your rear plate is obscured by a bike rack or wheelchair carrier, you must purchase and attach an auxiliary plate. Refer to Auxiliary plates.
Lost, stolen or damaged plates?
If your plates are lost, stolen, or damaged, you’ll need to follow the standard replacement procedure. Refer to Replace lost/stolen or damaged number plates.
