Replace or reapply for a learner's permit

If your Western Australian (WA) learner’s permit is lost or damaged, you can replace it. If it has expired by more than 3 years, you’ll need to reapply to continue learning to drive.

Replace via DoTDirect

If you have a DoTDirect account, you can login to your online account and apply and pay for a replacement learner's permit.

If you don't have a DoTDirect account, you can easily create one. Register for DotDirect online.

DoTDirect exceptions

You won't be able to buy a replacement learner’s permit online via DoTDirect, if you have:

  • changed your address within the last 7 days
  • ordered a replacement learner's permit for the specified class online in the last 12 months.

You'll need to visit a DTMI service centre or regional agent to replace your learner's permit.

Apply by post

To apply for replacement learner's permit by post, you'll need to send:

Make cheques or money orders payable to Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure.

Once your application has been processed, you'll receive your replacement learner’s permit via post.

Reapply for a learner's permit

Your WA learner’s permit is valid for 3 years. If it expires and you still want to learn to drive, you’ll need to reapply. You can apply for a new learner’s permit up to 3 months before your current one expires.

Tests you may need to re-sit

You won’t need to complete the Computerised Theory Test (CTT) or Hazard Perception Test (HPT) if you passed both tests within the last 5 years.

If you haven’t passed the CTT within the past 5 years, you’ll need to re-sit it before you can renew your learner’s permit.

If you've lost your DTMI issued learner log book and don't wish to use the Learn&Log app to record your supervised driving hours, you must attend a DTMI service centre or regional agent to apply for a new log book. A fee applies.
