Bunbury breakwater construction on schedule

Construction of the new northern breakwater at Bunbury’s Casuarina Boat Harbour is now complete to its full extent at low level, marking a major milestone in the delivery of the project.

 The 460-metre structure, costing $69.2 million is the centrepiece of the Transforming Bunbury’s Waterfront (TBW) initiative.

The new structure is already providing increased sheltering at the harbour ahead of winter and in parallel, work to reclaim land at the facility is progressing for the future boat lifting and servicing lease sites. 

The vision for the harbour will see it house up to 300 future boat pens and become a regional hub for the marine industry.

In consultation with the lead agency, the South West Development Commission, the Department of Transport is managing the delivery of the breakwater project overseeing work by a joint venture involving WA based and owned companies WA Limestone Contracting and Italia Stone Group. 

The rock used for the project is being sourced from quarries at Roelands, Byford, Shenton Ridge and Jarrahdale.

Completion of the breakwater at full height is expected by the end of the year and a new $4 million universal access fishing platform will be built on the northern side about one third along adjacent to a precinct supporting the needs of users, carers and visitors.
