DTMI’s Aboriginal Community Airstrip Renewal Program (ACARP) team are responsible for managing airstrip infrastructure upgrades in some of the State’s most remote Aboriginal communities.
Their latest project, an upgrade of the Balgo airstrip, was completed in July 2026 with funding from the Australian and WA Governments.
For Balgo residents the airstrip plays an important role in supporting travel, deliveries, emergency response and access to medical care.
Royal Flying Doctor Service WA (RFDS) CEO Judith Barker ASM said the upgraded airstrip would have lasting benefits for Balgo residents.
"For remote communities like Balgo, an airstrip is far more than a runway. It is a vital connection to emergency health care and other essential services.
“These upgrades will improve the safety and reliability of the airstrip, helping ensure our RFDS crews can continue delivering safe and often urgent medical care to those who need it, all throughout the year.”
