With personalised support, Samuel successfully obtained his Learner's Permit, began driving lessons, and is now one step closer to realising his dream of securing a driver’s licence.

Samuel is being supported by Community Living Association in Albany who's Driving Forward program is the first Driving Access and Equity Program solely focused on supporting people with disability to get their licence.

“I never imagined I could get my Learner’s Permit; it’s so good,” said Sam.

To prepare for the theory test necessary for his learner’s permit, Samuel participated in weekly lessons about road rules at Community Living Association, alongside his support person and Driving Forward Coach, Erica. He also practiced extensively at home.

At the Albany DTMI service centre, Samuel had the option to take an oral version of the test rather than the computer-based format. DTMI Mobile Services Officer, Marnie, was present to read the questions aloud.

“Having Marnie read the question to me and rephrase them sometimes really helped me stay calm and not get anxious,” Samuel shared.

Samuel is the sixth participant from Community Living Association to secure their Learner’s Permit through an oral theory test at the Albany office.

If you face challenges with reading or using computers, enquire at your local DTMI service centre or regional agent about the possibility of oral theory testing.
