Novice and rusty riders are invited to participate in a range of bike riding events across the Perth metro area.
Hosted between March and May, these events are an opportunity to experience bike riding with the whole family. Local guided rides that celebrate our Noongar culture, interactive riding challenges and an evening glow ride will build confidence and spark joy for riding - not just for kids but for parents and carers too.
A section of the newly built Long Park underneath the elevated Armadale Line features as part of the event program. Families will have the chance to adorn their bikes with glowing decorations and accessories and explore the precinct after sunset with a gentle-paced ride.
DTMI Director of Active Transport Michelle Prior said the activities are a fantastic way for the community to discover local riding networks in a safe, fun and interactive way.
“This series of events is all about supporting the community to discover the joy and benefits of bike riding, and also find walking and riding paths that are separated from traffic, allowing for safer journeys.
“We’re excited to incorporate one of Perth’s newest attractions, Long Park, as part of this year’s festivities. It will be a fun afternoon of activities that parents can complete alongside their children, with skills, navigation and incentives designed for adults too.
“Whether a novice or rusty rider, these events offer a great opportunity for people to build riding skills and confidence, and experience how easy it is to incorporate active and cost-efficient travel as part of their everyday journeys.”
Last year, 2 in 5 Western Australians rode bikes for transport related trips – like shopping or personal appointments, visiting friends and family or getting to their place of study– the highest on record.1
For annual bike riding participation, WA reached almost 38 per cent, exceeding the national rate and second only to the ACT.2
“It’s great to see some encouraging insights to how and why people are getting around by bike,” Ms Prior said.
“Our world class active transport network is continuing to make it possible for people to avoid traffic congestion and instead choose to walk, wheel or ride more often to get around.”
The free community events are made possible by the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure and administered by WestCycle.
