Buoyed by our success of Margaret River Pro surf event

A successful collaboration between DTMI Maritime and DPIRD Fisheries saw this year’s World Surf League Margaret River Pro event reach new safety heights.

Resulting from a chance conversation between colleagues at the collocated Marine Operations Centre (MOC) at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, one of Maritime’s directional wave rider buoys was used to ensure the safety of the Fisheries’ shark detection vessel positioned in the channel close to the surf break.

It’s generally acknowledged as very dangerous for a vessel to be so close to the action, especially when the waves were often large, powerful and frequently breaking wide into the channel.

The situation presented a great opportunity to use one of Maritime’s wave data collection buoys to mitigate the danger to the Fisheries’ vessel and those working on board.

A smaller, baby oceanographic buoy, also known as Bob, was perfect for this unique deployment that was easily made operational and transported to site.

Bob was positioned several hundred metres beyond the surf break providing key data to the bridge of the Fisheries’ vessel about the size and direction of waves headed their way.

The information allowed the skipper a couple of minutes to reposition the vessel if needed, to be safe from flooding and possible capsize.

Over the duration of the event, the system was fine-tuned and is now being considered for inclusion in the safety arrangements for future Pro events.
