About our internships
Are you currently undertaking or have completed studies in transport planning, engineering, behavioural and social sciences, spatial science, data science or information technology? Then we want to hear from you!
Our internship program will expose you to our Active Transport, Transport Planning and Transport Insights branches, to provide strategic advice and planning to deliver sustainable transport solutions for the prosperity of the State.
This is an opportunity to gain valuable skills and knowledge across the three branches:
Active Transport
Active Transport supports the delivery of active transport solutions in Western Australia. Making it an easy, attractive and widely accepted choice for people of all ages and abilities to walk, wheel or ride as part of their everyday journeys. Active Transport work to create travel behaviour change programs and provide infrastructure and the planning of safe and connected networks. Our work includes the following interest areas:
- Transport planning
- Behavioural and social sciences
- Stakeholder engagement
Transport Planning
The Transport Planning Branch works with the West Australian community to realise the best transport system for all stakeholders. We work to proactively plan for the provision of integrated transport and land use for Western Australia. Our work includes the following interest areas:
- Land and transport planning
- Engineering
- Policy
Transport Insights
The Transport Insights Branch provide evidence-based insights and share practical advice in view of emerging trends, challenges and opportunities impacting the WA transport system. Our work supports the government in meeting the changing needs of the WA community. Our work includes the following interest areas:
- Transport modelling
- Spatial science
- Data science
- Strategic planning

How the internship works
Once you have submitted an expression of interest, we will assess it and if there is a potential match, we will contact you.
The project work, expectations and timeframes will be discussed and agreed by all participants including your course provider before the internship commences.
We offer paid internship opportunities throughout the year as follows:
- Semester 1 – 1 day per week over a 4 month period (maximum 12 days)
- Semester 2 – 1 day per week over a 4 month period (maximum 12 days)
- Summer Break – 3 days per week for 6-8 weeks (maximum 24 days)
These are in-office placements and are not open to remote working arrangements.
How to apply
If you meet the criteria and are interested in expressing your interest for our internship program, you can complete the EOI form below.
To apply, you need to be:
- currently undertaking or have completed studies in transport planning, engineering, environment and sustainability, spatial science, data science, behavioural and social sciences, information technology or a discipline mentioned on the EOI form; and
- a minimum of halfway through your second year at Curtin University, ECU, Murdoch, Notre Dame, UWA or other university.
Our priority is to offer work placements that enable professional experience required as part of a student’s curriculum. There are limited placements available.
