Maritime, Waterways Safety Management
The Department of Transport Waterways Safety Management branch is responsible for the safe and sustainable use of navigable waters along the Western Australian coastline and inland waterways. We achieve this by engaging in a positive and collaborative manner with the public and industry groups to change behaviours and ensure compliance with relevant laws and legislations.
The Waterways Safety branch consists of three teams:
- Compliance and investigations
- Navigational Safety
- Safety Education
Our Maritime traineeships are an annual intake, with applications opening in October of each year. Find out about our marine traineeships.
Trainee Marine
As a Marine Trainee your role is varied covering compliance and education patrols by vessel and vehicle in many locations around the State. You will navigate patrol vessels, speak to the public, inspect equipment, enforce the rules and at times issue marine infringements and boating cautions.
In the role you will:
- inspect moorings and jetties
- monitor aquatic events
- provide education to schools and groups
- participate in sea search and rescue, and
- other emergency response situations such as oil pollution clean ups.
This is a uniquely challenging and highly rewarding role with excellent training and qualifications provided and opportunities to progress to other positions.

Trainee Maritime Safety Education Officer
