Car licence

Before you begin

Find out if you're eligible for a licence to drive a car in WA.

Manual or automatic?

In Western Australia, there are two types of car driver's licences, you can obtain:

  • Manual (C class) license (you can drive BOTH a manual or automatic car)
  • Automatic (C-A class) licence (you can ONLY drive an automatic car).

Learning to drive either manual or automatic is up to you. In recent years, with automatic car production over taking manual, fewer drivers have opted for a manual licence.

If you chose to obtain an automatic (C-A class) licence, you could always upgrade to a manual C class licence.

Do you have a current interstate or New Zealand Learner's permit?

If you have a current interstate or New Zealand learner’s permit, you may apply to have your learner’s permit recognised in WA. Find out more on our visiting or moving to WA page.

Learner's permit: Proof of identity requirements

Before you get your learner's permit you will need to prove your identity. You will need to supply your original birth certificate (not a copy or commemorative certificate). If your parent or legal guardian attends a centre with you, you can complete a Secondary Identification Statutory Declaration (E41) form. You can also use a school report and your school ID and ask your school for a letter with your current residential address on it. Make sure you bring physical records – digital versions will not be accepted.
