Transfer a licence from an experienced driver recognised country

There are certain countries where drivers may be classed as an experienced driver based on their age.

If you’re under 25 years old

You will need to pass the relevant theory test and practical driving assessment (PDA) to transfer an overseas licence for each class of vehicle you wish to transfer.

Follow the steps outlined for driver's licences held in non-recognised countries.

Heavy vehicle licences

If you hold a Light Rigid class equivalent, you will need to pass the relevant theory test and PDA.

If you hold any other truck or heavy vehicle licence, you will need to pass a Heavy Vehicle Theory Test (HVTT) and relevant PDA.

If you’re 25 years old or older

You do not need to take the theory test or practical driving assessment to transfer a car or motorcycle licence.

You can follow the steps outlined for driver's licences held in recognised countries.

Heavy vehicle licences

If you hold a Light Rigid class equivalent, you do not need to pass a theory test but you must pass a PDA.

If you hold any other truck or heavy vehicle licence, you will need to pass a Heavy Vehicle Theory Test (HVTT) and relevant PDA.

Hong Kong driver’s licences

The same age requirements apply for Hong Kong driver's licences, however, if you are over the age of 25 and have held your licence for less than one year, you will need to sit the theory and practical driving assessment.

We will contact the road safety authority in Hong Kong on your behalf to verify your licence details.

This verification process can take up to 10 business days to complete.

If your licence expired over 12 months ago

If your licence has expired over 12 months ago, no matter your age, you will need to follow the steps outlined for driver's licences held in non-recognised countries. This will include taking the theory test and Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).
