They were an unprecedented hit when they first launched and now in great news for regional residents, capped airfares through the Regional Airfare Zone Cap (RAZC) scheme have been locked in for the long term.

Zone cap fares cap the maximum cost for regional residents on return flights to Perth for personal reasons. The fares launched in 2022 as a trial and provide guaranteed year-round airfare affordability - improving the liveability of WA’s regions.

To allow the scheme to continue, the maximum zone cap fares for travel from 1 July 2026 will be set according to if a flight is low or high demand.

For zone 1 for locations less than 1,000km from Perth the maximum capped price will be set at $199 one way for low demand flights and $265 for high demand flights.

For zone 2 locations more than 1,000km from Perth the maximum capped price will be set at $299 one way for low demand flights and $385 for high demand flights.

Low demand flights are generally off-peak or booked well in advance of a departure date. High demand flights generally operate during peak periods, including public holidays and school holidays, or when booked for last minute travel.

For the first time, airlines will be able to choose to offer zone cap fares that are even cheaper than the set maximums, creating the potential for greater savings for travellers.

Zone cap fares set by the airlines on RAZC routes for travel from 1 July 2026 will be published in the new year and residents are encouraged to compare prices and book ahead to secure the best possible fare.

Bookings and travel under the original RAZC scheme remain until 30 June 2026.
