Restrictions and conditions

Your Western Australian driver's licence may include restrictions and conditions that are represented by codes on the back of your licence. Find out what the codes mean and how to remove a restriction from your licence.

  Codes for licence conditions

The following list provides examples of additional condition codes that may be included on your driver's licence.

Condition code What the code means
I The holder must drive only a motor vehicle fitted with a breath alcohol device.
S The holder must wear corrective lenses at all times while driving.
V The holder must drive only a motor vehicle fitted with specified driver aids, or modified as directed in writing by the driver licensing authority.
X The holder must comply with any condition of which they have been notified in writing by the Department. Where the code X is applied, licence holders will be issued with a notice stating the relevant licence or class conditions.
Z The holder must not have a blood alcohol concentration that equals or exceeds 0.02 per cent.

  Codes for licence restrictions

Restrictions on a licence class identify the limitations under which the licence class has been issued. These restrictions will be detailed on the reverse of your licence or on a separate notice provided at the time of renewal.

For example, a car licence with an automatic transmission restriction will appear as C-A. This will be detailed on the reverse of your licence to indicate that you are restricted to driving automatic cars.

A motorcycle licence with an automatic restriction will appear as R-E-A (in the case of a holder restriction to LAMS approved motorcycles not exceeding 660 cc and under 150 kW/t) or R-A (in the case of unrestricted holder of a motorcycle licence).

The following are standard class restrictions. Additional restrictions may also be imposed.

Condition code What the code means
A The holder is restricted to driving motor vehicles fitted with automatic transmission only.
B The holder is restricted to driving motor vehicles fitted with synchromesh transmission only.
E The holder is restricted to riding a LAMS approved motorcycle with an engine capacity under 660 cc and under 150 kW/t.
N The holder is restricted to riding a moped only.
