Light vehicle: Example, how to calculate your vehicle licence fee

In the following example, a 12 month renewal is applied to a standard motor car (Tare weight: 1,650 kg - the weight of the unladen vehicle):

Calculate your light vehicle licence fee Fee calculation
Vehicle fee per 100 kg x Total weight (rounded up to the nearest 100 kg) / 100 $27.56 x (1,700 kg / 100) = $468.52
Plus prescribed flat fee $13.20 (12-month renewal: (discounted rate) = $6.60) $6.60
Total vehicle licence fee (rounded to the nearest five cents) $475.12

Notes:

  • Prescribed flat fee for a vehicle for a period of one year is $13.20 discounted 50%.
  • Any vehicle renewal term less than 12 months; calculation will be $13.20 divided by 12 then multiplying by the number of months in respect of which the renewal is paid.
    • 6-month renewal: ($13.20/12)*6 = $6.60.
    • 3-month renewal: ($13.20/12)*3 = $3.30.
    • 1-month renewal: ($13.20/12) = $1.10.

Key:

  • GVM = Gross vehicle Mass. kg = kilogram. cc = cubic centimetre, engine displacement.
  • kW/t = kilowatt per tonne, 1 m² / S³.

Step 1:Get the caravan or camper inspected

Before you can submit a caravan or camper licence application, you will need to get it inspected for roadworthiness.

Please go to Get a vehicle inspected for more information on new vehicle inspections

Step 2:Complete an application (Form VL17)

Once the caravan or camper has successfully passed the inspection, you can complete an application to license a vehicle using form VL17.

If the caravan or camper was previously licensed under another name, a declaration of the seller must be completed on form VL17.

For more information, please go to Buy a vehicle (transfer licence).

Vehicle licence duty

Caravans (not motor propelled) and camper trailers that are permanently fitted for human habitation in the course of a journey are exempt from the payment of vehicle licence duty.

  Step 3:Provide proof of identity

Only one person can be nominated as a vehicle licence holder. Form VL186 is to be used where the vehicle is jointly owned. This form must accompany the caravan or camper trailer license application form in order to verify the applicant's particulars.

Please go to Proof of identity for more information.

Step 4:Submit the application in person (Form VL17)

Applications for a caravan or camper licence must be submitted in person at a Driver and Vehicle Services centre or regional agent.

You will need to provide:

  • Completed vehicle licence application Form VL17.
  • Completed proof of vehicle ownership Form VL186.

You must present a weighbridge certificate if the tare/mass weight of the caravan or camper cannot be established from the manufacturer's specifications, previous licence documents or licensing records.

Number plates

Once the caravan or camper is licensed a new set of number plates will be issued. Most standard caravans have a mounting for a 372 mm x 136 mm number plate on the rear of the vehicle.

If you have purchased a caravan that has been previously modified, you must:

  • rigidly fix the plate to the rear of the caravan in a conspicuous position;
  • ensure the plate is clearly visible by day and by night (plate light required); and
  • attach the plate with no part of the plate more than 1300 mm above the ground.

You must buy and affix an auxiliary plate if a bike rack or mobility device is attached to your caravan and obstructs the view of the rear number plate.

  • If your vehicle has interstate plates attached, these may need to be surrendered at the time of licensing your vehicle in WA. Refer to the relevant licensing authority that the plates were issued from for further information.
  • Remove your vehicle licence plates after you arrive at the centre or agency. Remember to bring your old number plates in with you.

Note: The Department does not provide a licence plate removal service.

For information on importing a vehicle from overseas, please go to License an imported vehicle.
