Compliance plates

A compliance plate was attached to a vehicle by a manufacturer or an importer that stated that the vehicle complied with the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989.

Phase out of compliance plates

On 1 July 2021 the Commonwealth Road Vehicle Standard Act 2018 (RVSA) came into effect for the phasing out of compliance plates, replacing the former with an online Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) and requiring new and imported vehicles to display a Secure Vehicle Identification label (SVI).

New and imported vehicles are required to be entered on the RAV before they are first provided to the Australian market, unless an exception (e.g. a non-road use import approval) applies.

Individuals and companies can create an account and apply for a Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) approval through Road Vehicle Regulator ROVER - a one-stop shop for RVS applications and approvals.
