Boats and trailers targeted in Transport's pre-summer safety campaign
News for the Department of Transport
Skippers are being reminded of the need for regular maintenance of their vessel, trailer and safety equipment before heading out on the water this season.
The Department of Transport (DoT) will conduct weekend long campaigns targeting boat ramps north and south of the river over the next month to reinforce safe boating practice.
DoT Director Waterways Safety Chris Mather said the first of two campaigns involving marine and vehicle compliance officers would focus on boat ramps from Hillarys to Two Rocks next weekend (Nov 19 and 20, 2017) and the second, on December 2 and 3, 2017, would concentrate on launch sites from Woodman Point to Port Kennedy.
"To assist the boating community DoT produces a free BEST Check guide which identifies items under the headings boat, equipment, safety equipment and trailer to be maintained before each trip and lists items for an annual 45 point check," Mr Mather said.
Another focus of each operation will be reinforcing the need for skippers to carry in-date flares.
Mr Mather said it was the responsibility of the skipper to ensure their vessel and trailer are properly maintained and that the required safety equipment is on board, in good order and accessible in an emergency.
