River users urged to take extra care during Avon Descent

News for the Department of Transport

Regular users of the Avon and Swan rivers, between Northam and Bayswater, are being advised to take extra care when on the water this weekend.

Department of Transport (DoT) Director Waterways Safety Management Chris Mather said the Avon Descent was an approved aquatic activity scheduled for Saturday August 3 and Sunday August 4, 2019 that could impact on river users.

“DoT encourages people to check the scheduled activity for the waterway they plan to use and when on the water take extra precautions particularly when operating close to blind bends and within narrow channels,” Mr Mather said.

“High speed power race vessels are exempted from the usual speed limits during approved events and may approach other users without warning.

“Swimming where events are scheduled is discouraged.”

Mr Mather said DoT worked with event organisers to raise awareness of the increased risk to paddle craft and other users during the event.

The Avon Descent will see around 60 power craft travelling from Northam to Perth over the two days.

DoT’s free brochures Paddle Safe and Swift Water Paddling promote safe paddling practice and provide useful information and tips for enthusiasts.
