Thornlie Senior High School (TSHS) joined the Department of Transport’s Your Move Schools program in 2019.

Championed by the Sue James, Community Health Nurse, Child and Adolescent Community Health, with support from a student-led ‘health and wellbeing committee’, the TSHS Your Move team is setting out to decrease car trips to and from the school, in order to increase health outcomes for students and teachers and reduce congestion around the area.

Sue is a passionate advocate for mental and physical health and views the Your Move program as a critical influence to affect positive change.

Having a diverse team of students, staff and parents involved in the program is valuable to set goals, plan and deliver activities, and reflect on and celebrate achievements. It also helps spread the workload and gives team members a depth of experience aligned to their interests.

TSHS has previously received Connecting Schools Grant funding support, which is available to eligible Your Move Schools.

  • In 2020, funding of over $2,000 awarded for bike racks and a repair station.
  • In 2021, funding of $15,000 awarded to install a bike rack roof.
  • In 2022, funding of over $7,000 awarded to increase bike rack capacity.

“It is wonderful to see these new facilities without a monetary cost to the school. Thank you!”

“The new racks have made our bike compound much tidier, and we can get more bikes in. Let’s hope that we get more students riding to school to put the bike racks to good use.”

Sue James, TSHS Your Move Champion

The team regularly communicates Your Move events and updates to the school community through the school newsletter and looks for opportunities to integrate the program with general school activities.
