People from the Canning area are being invited to join the Canning Pedal Palooza, a free community bike riding series being held on Saturdays in September.

Canning Pedal Palooza will happen on the 7th,14th, 21st and 28th of September between 1 pm and 3 pm at the Canning River Eco Education Centre in Kent Street, Wilson.

During the two-hour sessions everyone will have an opportunity to build and improve their bike riding skills and confidence through interactive activities such as rides that explore the Canning River Trails, treasure hunt and obstacle course, learn how to use the local pump track, and have the condition of their bikes checked by a professional bike mechanic.

Each Saturday afternoon session will start from the Canning River Eco Education Centre and culminate in a supported ‘Champions Ride’ on the final Saturday with 5 km, 10 km and 15 km options.

Canning Pedal Palooza is being delivered by the Department of Transport in partnership with the City of Canning and Cycle Sense.

It is part of the Armadale Line Active Travel project, which is using the Armadale Line shutdown to encourage people to discover more active ways to travel for short trips, instead of driving.

Department of Transport Director of Active Transport Michelle Prior said the transformation of the Armadale Line was an ideal time for people to rediscover bike riding.

“Many people have bikes sitting in the garage, but not many opportunities to get out and do things as a greater part of their community,” Ms Prior said.

“Having organised, community-oriented bike-riding activities encourages people to enjoy their neighbourhood, get exercise and see the facilities available in their area.”

The Armadale Line Active Travel project is being delivered by the Department of Transport in partnership with METRONET and the Public Transport Authority in collaboration with local governments and schools.

The project supports and encourages people to walk, wheel and ride for local trips such as school, shops and to bus stations during the shutdown period.

“People’s travel choices are habitual and with the Armadale Line shutdown, people’s travel habits are being disrupted,” Ms Prior said.

“We’re encouraging people to use the disruption as an opportunity to find new, active ways of getting around their neighbourhood.”
