About your PTSS participation

Read this page for information about your subsidy entitlements, how to use your PTSS card and how to manage your PTSS participation.

The Passenger Transport Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) Guidelines for Participants outline rules and responsibilities for PTSS participants and applicants.

What subsidy am I entitled to?

Standard subsidy type

The standard subsidy is for participants who don’t use a wheelchair. With a standard subsidy, you are entitled to 50% of the fare (up to a maximum of $25) when travelling in a conventional taxi.

Standard subsidy recipients will have a yellow card (example below).

Wheelchair subsidy type

The wheelchair subsidy is for participants who have demonstrated they require a wheelchair. With a wheelchair subsidy, you are entitled to:

  • 50% of the fare (up to a maximum subsidy of $25) when travelling in a conventional taxi.
  • 75% of the fare (up to a maximum subsidy of $35) when travelling in a wheelchair in a wheelchair accessible taxi.

Wheelchair subsidy recipients will have a purple card (example below).

Note: If you previously had a green TUSS card, you will have a purple PTSS card with the same subsidy amount you previously received.

Your PTSS card

Your PTSS card will include:

  • your name;
  • a card number;
  • a photo of you;
  • what type of subsidy you get; and
  • an expiry date.

To support people with vision accessibility needs, your PTSS card will also include:

  • the letters ‘PTSS’ in Braille on the front; and
  • a cut out on the side.

The PTSS card is activated the first time it is used.

Responsibilities for PTSS card holders

When you use your PTSS card, you agree to follow the terms and conditions outlined in the Passenger Transport Subsidy Scheme Participant Guidelines (below), including the following.

  • Do not sell, exchange, lend or give away your PTSS card.
  • You or your carer/support person must hold on to your PTSS card, TUSS card and/or TUSS vouchers.
  • You must not leave your PTSS card with a taxi driver or other person.
  • Maintain the condition of your PTSS card – do not modify or damage it.
  • Inform the Department of Transport (DoT) immediately if your PTSS card is lost, stolen or damaged.
  • You must not collude with a taxi driver or other person to use PTSS in an authorised way (for example, increasing the amount of subsidy payable or not paying your fare).
  • You cannot take a PTSS-subsidised journey if your taxi driver is a family member.
  • Your PTSS card (or TUSS vouchers) cannot be used to provide a tip or gratuity to the taxi driver.

Lost, stolen or damaged PTSS cards

You must report lost or stolen PTSS cards to DoT as soon as you realise your card is missing. You can contact DoT by:

Once reported, DoT will cancel your PTSS card and send you a new one. Upon cancellation, the PTSS card will no longer be capable of accessing your subsidy. The new PTSS card will have a different card number to your previous card.

Easy Read – how to use your PTSS card

We have made an Easy Read document to explain how to use your PTSS card.

There are two versions of the document:

  • a PDF version with pictures to explain some ideas; and
  • a text-only Word version.

You can ask someone you trust for support to:

  • read this document; and
  • find more information.

Find the Easy Read documents below.

Changing your subsidy type

If your condition changes, you may request to change your subsidy type.

To request to change your subsidy type, we require a letter from your medical practitioner outlining:

  • how your condition has changed; and
  • confirming that you require use of a wheelchair.

The letter must:

  • be written on the medical practitioner’s letterhead;
  • contain the medical practitioner’s full details, including Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration number; and
  • be signed by the medical practitioner.

Email this letter to ondemandtransport@transport.wa.gov.au.

This information will be assessed by an independent occupational therapist contracted to the Department of Transport (DoT), who will provide a recommendation regarding your suitability. You will receive a letter or email from DoT regarding the outcome of this request.

Note: you are responsible for paying any fees or charges associated with medical appointments.

Requests for information from the Department of Transport

PTSS participants must co-operate with and respond to any Department of Transport request for information about your access to or use of PTSS, including:

  • an eligibility review or an independent medical eligibility assessment;
  • information in relation to your access to or use of PTSS; or
  • information to verify that your use of PTSS is authentic, for example when subsidy payments appear to be irregular or to exceed reasonable use.

FAQs

When will I get my new PTSS card?

If you are an existing TUSS participant and have confirmed your contact details with DoT, watch for your new PTSS card in the mail in the next 7–10 days.

If you do not receive your PTSS card by mid-March, or need to confirm your contact details, please contact DoT:

TUSS cards and vouchers must continue to be accepted by taxi drivers until 30 September 2025.

Note: If your TUSS card is green, your new PTSS card will be purple. You will receive the same subsidy amounts you are used to – only the appearance of the card has changed.

I have TUSS vouchers, can I still use them?

From 1 March, your taxi driver should be prepared to accept your PTSS card.

There will be a transition period between 1 March and 30 September 2025, where old TUSS cards and vouchers must continue to be accepted by taxi drivers.

From 1 October 2025, TUSS vouchers can no longer be used.
