The Railway Street Safe Active Street (SAS) in Bluff Point Geraldton has been recognised at the recent Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Awards – WA Division, taking out two Excellence Awards.

Opened in August 2022, Geraldton’s Railway Street SAS was one of the key pilot projects of the Department of Transport’s (DoT) SAS program and is the first regional SAS delivered in Western Australia.

Developed in partnership between DoT and the City of Greater Geraldton, the route provides a critical link in the City’s northern active transport network, offering a safe connection for all road users and supports locals to walk, wheel or ride to nearby parks, businesses and schools.

The project won two categories at the IPWEA Excellence Awards – the Sarkis Petrossian Award for Innovative Practice in Traffic Safety Management and Best Public Works Project less than $2 million award (regional).
Michelle Prior, Director Active Transport and Safety, DoT attended the awards ceremony and said it was a great time to reflect on the successes of the project.

“Partnering with the City of Greater Geraldton to deliver the regional pilot was a first for both DoT and the City, given the Railway Street SAS was the first of its kind in regional WA.

“It’s great for the project to be recognised, and we are just as thrilled this SAS is delivering positive and safer outcomes for the local community.

“The route provides an important local connection, and we have seen increases in the number of people walking and riding, and corresponding decreases in vehicle volumes and speed.”
