Western Australian schools accessing the Connecting Schools Grant – a Your Move case study

The Connecting Schools Grant is an initiative of the State Government, led by Department of Transport and jointly funded by Department of Education. Schools must be registered and actively engaged in the Your Move program and meet certain eligibility requirements to be able to apply for a grant.

Read on to discover how some of our Your Move Schools have used their Connecting Schools Grant.

Winterfold Primary School
Winterfold Primary School joined Your Move in 2017.

Teacher Julia Calvert is the school’s dedicated Your Move Champion and seeks opportunities to present on the context, benefits and best implementation methods of Your Move to the Fremantle network of schools and Winterfold school community.

Winterfold Primary School has received three grants since 2020, totalling just over $30,800. The funding has been put towards building two bike parking areas, installing bike racks and a bike repair station. 

“Already we have seen the excitement from students and parents alike. There has been an increase in bikes at school and students are even trying out the repair station to pump up their tyres. The usefulness of this infrastructure is not only limited to storing and repairing of bikes. Miss Molony took her technology class out to look at the materials used and the purpose of the tools. Neerigen Brook Primary School
Neerigen Brook Primary School joined Your Move in 2019.

With the help of a student team, the school’s Your Move Champion, teacher Heather Barrett, has been vigorous in promoting and celebrating active travel event days, completing student, school staff and parent surveys, hosting ‘Fume Free Fridays’ and creating a school access guide to encourage more students to walk, wheel and ride for the school journey.

In 2021-22, the school received a grant of $15,000 which was put towards building a modern, wonderfully waterproof and very secure steel bike shelter for students parking their bikes and scooters.

“Our amazing bike shelter, built thanks to the grants we received through the program, has been a massive success. There are racks on both sided of the shelter to allow space for the massive burst of kids cycling and scootering - how about that 51 per cent increase [in cycling rates]!” – Heather Barrett, Your Move Champion

Bramfield Park Primary School
Bramfield Park Primary School joined Your Move in 2021.

The school has engaged with the Your Move program on many levels, through hosting active travel events, as well as bike maintenance and education courses for students, embedding the program into their school business plan, and promoting WA Bike Month.

Bramfield Park Primary School secured a $14,900 Connecting Schools Grant in 2022-23, which was put towards construction of a bike shelter.

Teacher Annita Wenban, who leads Your Move for the school, has seen an increasing trend in the number of students riding their bikes and scooters for the school journey, backed by survey data since 2021.
