Edward is the sole carer for his teenage son who lives with multiple disabilities. At 55 years of age, Edward had never had a driver’s licence and had his learner’s permit for three years. He was referred to the McGovern Foundation’s Wanderer Program in Kalgoorlie, an initiative supported by the Driving Access and Equity Program.

Edward was motivated to achieve his licence so he could drive his son and himself to medical appointments in Perth, rather than taking the train and relying on public transport when in Perth.

He completed 21 supervised driving hours through the Wanderer Program and built a trusted relationship with Program Coordinator, Henry who said he was very committed to his goal.

“During those hours I was able to learn more about Edward’s family and personal circumstances,” said Henry.

“He has had a really tough time of late, and it was very rewarding to celebrate with him when he passed his practical driving test.

“You couldn’t wipe the smile off both our faces!”
