Road trip dream becomes reality for Roechelle

Esperance mum Roechelle had always planned to travel to Derby with her two children to reunite with her partner, but without a driver’s licence, the dream was put on hold.
“I had no car; family members had work commitments that meant they couldn’t supervise the hours of driving needed for the log book,” Roechelle said.
“If it was raining, it was hard for me to get to the shops with the kids, or to Kindylink. Not having a car limited my ability to get to where I needed to go,” she said.
Thanks to Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (ETNTAC), who received Driving Access and Equity Program grant support, Rochelle received the help she needed to get her licence, including professional driving instruction.
“I knew I would be able to pass, I just needed the people having time for me,” she said.
Having her licence has made an incredible difference to the practicalities of parenting for Roechelle and her children are delighted with their mum’s new-found freedom.
“They love going to the park and because they haven’t done it much, even driving into town is exciting for them”, she said.
