Samiir’s sights set on the mines
Insights and resources for the Department of Transport
Samiir, an 18-year-old from Somalia, moved to Kalgoorlie with his mum, seeking employment in the mining industry.
With the help of the McGovern Foundation, a Driving Access and Equity Program grant recipient, Samiir got his driver’s licence which is a big step in the right direction towards Samiir achieving his goals!
Henry, a mentor from the McGovern Foundation, worked closely with Samiir to help and encourage him to get a licence.
“Henry helped me a lot. My friend got his licence with McGovern and told me to contact them. I couldn’t afford to keep paying for lessons and tests. I failed 3 times before. I had 4 lessons and then passed,” said Samiir.
Samiir can now drive his mum to the shops and is working towards gaining a manual licence to improve his chances of getting a job on the mines.
