Dredging starts at Lancelin

Maintenance dredging has commenced to restore navigation channels at Lancelin with the sand removed to be used to restore beaches.

Department of Transport (DoT) Coastal Infrastructure General Manager Steve Jenkins said maintenance dredging, last completed in 2009, would restore depths and ensure safe navigation and access to the jetty at Lancelin.

"The $500,000 project will be undertaken over the next three months and see some of the dredged material placed on Grace Darling Beach, widening the coastline and enhancing the enjoyment of the area," Mr Jenkins said.

It's estimated 24,000 cubic metres of sand will be dredged from the channels of which 8,000 cubic metres will be deposited on the beach south of the jetty.

Skippers operating in the area and people accessing the beach should be aware of the special safety arrangements implemented for the dredging and sand replenishment works.

Mr Jenkins said testing had confirmed the dredged material could be deposited on the beach.

"When initially placed on the beach it will be naturally discoloured. However, it will bleach in the sun and not be noticeable after a few weeks," Mr Jenkins said.
