Wheels in motion for regional cycling plans

Bike plans for the future of Western Australia's regional cycling network are now underway.

A/Managing Director of Policy, Planning and Investment at the Department of Transport Steve Beyer said the development of the regional bike plans will complement the State's long-term vision for the expansion of cycling facilities by setting blueprints for WAs regional areas.

"The bike network plans will guide the delivery of strategic cycling infrastructure to meet the growing need for convenient, safe cycling routes and end-of-trip facilities," Mr Beyer said.

"There will be a focus on supporting the growth plans of regional cities and towns, linking them together and with key tourism attractions such as trails and landmarks."

The investment of $280,000 will go towards the regional bike plans for:

• The City of Bunbury and Shires of Capel, Dardanup and Harvey.
• The City of Busselton.
• The Shire of Nannup.
• The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River.
• The City of Greater Geraldton.

The plans will help to ensure local infrastructure provides opportunities for greater recreational activities and supports the appeal for significant sporting events.

Bike plans for other regional areas are being considered and will be confirmed in the second half of 2017.

The regional bike plans are being developed collaboratively with the South West Development Commission, local government and community groups.
