The new reference group will meet later today to commence the task of progressing a long-term vision for the future redevelopment of Two Rocks Marina.

Chaired by the Mayor of the City of Wanneroo Tracey Roberts, the majority of the 14 member Two Rocks Marina Reference Group represent the community, business interests, landowners and facility user groups.

Facility manager, the Department of Transport (DoT), will coordinate the group and is represented along with the Department of Planning Lands and Heritage and City of Wanneroo.

DoT General Manager of Coastal Infrastructure Steve Jenkins said the reference group would play an important role in ensuring the marina realises its long-term potential as a key destination north of Perth providing safe maritime facilities and access to the ocean while stimulating the local economy and employment opportunities through retail and tourism.

"There have been a number of investigations and proposals for the development of the marina by different parties over many years but this is an opportunity to involve the wider community in the decision making," Mr Jenkins said.

DoT is currently implementing a $6 million upgrade at the marina which will address aging infrastructure, improve safety and provide a foundation for future redevelopment opportunities at the facility which were left in a poor condition when the lease with a private operator expired. Environmental approvals have been secured and planning approvals are underway.

Priority repairs to the breakwater are planned to commence ahead of winter, while a contract will be awarded shortly for demolition of ageing maritime structures, including the original fuel jetty and the construction of a small number of relocated boat pens.
