Dredging to start at Point Grey, Mandurah
News for the Department of Transport
Maintenance dredging is about to commence to widen and restore safe navigation depths to the Point Grey Channel - the waterway linking the Peel Inlet, Dawesville Channel and Harvey Estuary.
Department of Transport (DoT) Coastal Infrastructure General Manager Steve Jenkins said dredging was vital for continued safe access for recreational and commercial craft through the waterway.
"The $675,000 project will take three months to complete and see approximately 13,000 cubic metres of sand taken from the channel," Mr Jenkins said.
"The dredged material, to be pumped through a series of floating and submerged pipes, has been approved to be deposited in the Peel Inlet 600 metres north east of the eastern end of the channel."
The last dredging in this area, also known as the Zig Zag Channel, was completed in 2003.
Skippers operating in the area during the dredging work should note that a temporary 8 knot speed restriction is in place for the length of the channel. A temporary notice with information for skippers is available at the Peel Temporary Notices to Mariners page.
When navigating near the dredge, skippers should always make radio contact with the dredge to ensure it is safe to pass.
Radio frequencies are:
- VHF 73.
- Marine 27 MHz Channel 90.
