New safety hub for skippers at Perth International Boat Show

Skippers can access all they need to know to be safe this boating season at the new Maritime and Road Information Hub at this year's Perth International Boat Show.

Coordinated by the Department of Transport (DoT), the new one-stop-shop at Elizabeth Quay includes key Government agencies and volunteer groups, making it easier for skippers to get the latest information and advice on boating safety.

DoT Manager Safety Education Laurie Adams said skippers would be able to get tips, technical information and advice on everything related to safe boating from trailer maintenance and fishing rules and regulations to interpreting weather forecasts and safety equipment requirements.

"We are showcasing in one location the significant resources available to the boating community and taking the opportunity to pass on knowledge and expertise to skippers to make their next day on the water a safer one," Mr Adams said.

DoT, Main Roads, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions, Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Western Australian Police, Bureau of Meteorology and Volunteer Marine Rescue Western Australia are part of the hub.

Mr Adams said skippers could also participate in DoT's very successful Old4New lifejacket upgrade program at the hub from 9am to 12 noon on all days of the boat show.

The Old4New program, delivered in conjunction with the Royal Life Saving Society of Western Australia, is an upgrade opportunity where old, damaged, obsolete or foam filled lifejackets can be replaced with a new modern more comfortable one for $65 or a voucher for use at a local retail outlet when purchasing a new lifejacket.

Voucher limits and restrictions are in place to ensure the benefits of the program apply to as many vessels as possible so people who want to participate should check the guidelines on the Lifejackets page.

"For many skippers, their next boat trip will be their first in months, so it's a timely opportunity to refresh their safety knowledge, get the latest advice, and have their questions answered in the one convenient location," Mr Adams said.
