Work to start on Ellis St Jetty upgrade

The popular Ellis Street Jetty is being upgraded to allow its long-term use by the local community and others.

Department of Transport (DoT) Director of Coastal Facilities Donna West said more than $300,000 would be spent on a major refurbishment following a recent engineer’s inspection that revealed the head of the structure was in poor condition.

“To ensure public safety the jetty will be temporarily closed while the work is undertaken over the next few months,” Ms West said.

“DoT contractors have been tasked with the work and will be on site later this week to commence the refurbishment.

“From tomorrow the jetty will be closed to vessels and pedestrians with barriers and signage installed to prevent people accessing the structure.

“People will be risking their safety if they fail to abide by the signage on site.”

In discussions about the planned refurbishment the Shire of Augusta Margaret River voiced  support given the popularity and importance of the structure to the local community

The Ellis Street Jetty was constructed in January 1984 and originally used prior to the construction of the Augusta Boat Harbour as a Service Jetty for fuelling vessels and loading and unloading passengers and product.
