Comprehensive feedback received on safety equipment proposals

The Department of Transport (DoT) has commenced analysis of feedback on proposed changes to the safety equipment requirements for recreational vessels in WA. 

The six-week comment period for the Recreational Vessel Safety Equipment Review Position Paper concluded on Friday with a total of 2,212 online surveys completed, several written submissions and comments from the 142 people who attended the nine information sessions held throughout the State.

The result is nearly double the number of people who provided comment on the initial Recreational Vessel Safety Equipment Review Discussion Paper in 2017, circulated to guide the development of the position paper along with input from an external reference group representing industry and boating organisations.

DoT Maritime Deputy General Manager Ray Buchholz said the results of the consultation would be used to guide the formulation of final recommendations for change. 

“The inclusive approach to the consultation has delivered comprehensive results reflecting the views of the broader boating community, not just motorised vessel skippers, with 939 of the survey respondents indicated that they had experience with paddle craft and 685 had experience kiteboarding and windsurfing,” Mr Buchholz said.

“The feedback will be carefully considered by DoT and the external reference group ahead of formal recommendations to the Minister for Transport in early 2020.

“In the meantime, people heading out on the water are encouraged to wear a lifejacket and ensure their safety equipment is well maintained and easily accessible.”
