Ellis St Jetty upgrade completed ahead of schedule

The popular Ellis Street Jetty has been reopened ahead of schedule following an extensive upgrade to ensure continued long-term use by the local community and others.

Department of Transport (DoT) Director of Coastal Facilities Donna West said the major refurbishment, which only commenced in October, was due for completion in early 2020 but now people will have use of the jetty before Christmas and during the holiday season.

“Working in cooperation with the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and the local community, DoT contractors, Broadspectrum, this week delivered the $400,000 project well ahead of schedule,” Ms West said. 

In September an inspection revealed the head of the structure was in poor condition and DoT announced plans to close the jetty and immediately start work on its refurbishment in October.

Work undertaken to repair the jetty included:

• Removal and replacement of the structure’s timber decking, with new timber used for 75%
• Removal of all structural timber, and replacement with 90 per cent new structural timber
• Strengthening and corrosion protection of the jetty’s steel super structure.

The Ellis Street Jetty was constructed in January 1984 and originally used prior to the construction of the Augusta Boat Harbour as a Service Jetty for fuelling vessels and loading and unloading passengers and product.
