Pedal power boosts recovery at Hillarys Boat Harbour

Work to better locate and more than double bicycle parking at Hillarys Boat Harbour is complete - making it easier for the 170,000 cyclists using West Coast Drive each year to visit and enjoy one of Perth’s best waterside locations.

Department of Transport (DoT) Coastal Facilities Director Donna West said cycling had been recently identified as an alternative transport option for the State’s busiest boat harbour resulting in a $50,000 project to install an additional 32 new bike racks, 12 family-friendly parking rails, two handy repair stations and two protection shelters.

“The new facilities which increase the number of bike parking places at Hillarys from 44 to 116, are in 12 new locations at major entrance points to the harbour and also closer to the retail and entertainment precinct improving safety and increasing visitor ease of access to and around the harbour,” Ms West said.

The Hillarys Integrated Transport Strategy, completed in 2019, found that secure, convenient and accessible bike parking was essential to adopting a complete integrated transport strategy at the harbour.

“More than 4 million people visit Hillarys Boat Harbour every year and this is tipped to increase as Perth’s northern corridor continues to grow, reinforcing the need for strategic planning and the implementation of infrastructure to support alternative transport options,” Ms West said.

“It’s hoped the expanded facilities for bike riders at the harbour will encourage individuals and families to make Hillarys their cycling destination and enjoy the many experiences on offer.

“Together with the newly opened walking trails at Hillarys, it makes a harbour visit a fantastic low-cost option for families during the upcoming school holidays.”
