Electrical upgrade starts at Port of Wyndham

Works on a long-awaited major electrical upgrade at the Port of Wyndham are set to commence this week.

As part of the project, aged transformers, switchgear and cabling will be replaced with modern, safer and more reliable equipment, addressing safety concerns and enhancing future operations at the port.

Last year, the Department of Transport (DoT) contracted WA company Advance Excavations to conduct the works, however these were delayed by COVID-19 restrictions and recent wet season weather events.

DoT Director of Project Delivery Cameron Smith said the $600,000 project would see aged high voltage infrastructure replaced throughout the facility providing a major boost to safety.

“The new infrastructure will be compliant with Australian Standards and provide increased safety for workers along with electrical supply reliability for a busy deep-water port,” Mr Smith said.

“Advance Excavations is an experienced contractor who has completed similar electrical and civil works at the Port of Wyndham previously and in the Kimberley region.

“The project will have no impact on daily port operations, and it’s envisaged the works will be completed by the end of May 2021.”

DoT is working closely with port operator Cambridge Gulf Limited to deliver the electrical upgrade.
