On-water safety changes finalised for Koombana Bay

News for the Department of Transport

There will be a reduction in the size of one of the two water ski areas at Koombana Bay to ensure safety with the introduction of the new northern breakwater at Casuarina Boat Harbour.

Department of Transport (DoT) Maritime Executive Director Chris Mather said there had been community support for all of the on-water changes proposed as part of the Bunbury Aquatic Use Review process late last year.

In addition to the water ski area boundary, changes to take effect from today,  include minor amendments to the five and eight knot speed restricted areas at Casuarina Boat Harbour and   reopening of waters at Koombana Bay for use by kayaks, windsurfers, sailing dinghies and similar craft. The closed waters to motorised vessels area within the Casuarina Boat Harbour at Jetty Baths will be formalised to enhance swimmer safety and new navigation aids to enhance the safety for those transiting the entrance to Casuarina Boat Harbour will be introduced.

Mr Mather said while there had been careful consideration of feedback received from the local community, the purpose of every aquatic use review is to ensure the safe, equitable and sustainable use of a waterway.

“With the construction of the breakwater in progress reviewing on-water arrangements at Koombana Bay was essential and it also provided an opportunity to address other navigation issues in the area to improve safety for users,” Mr Mather said.

“The review process also benefited from collaboration with the City of Bunbury, consultation with the relevant agencies and authorities and discussions with peak user groups.”

Updated signage will be installed to alert the community and the free Bunbury Busselton Boating Guide has been updated to reflect the changes. For a copy visit our website or request one by contacting DoT on 13 11 56.
